Swell Engines
We do not offer new swell engines
for general sale,
however, rebuilding and replacement
services
are available for existing
installations.
Below are the common Austin-built
engines through the years.
Iron-Side 9-stage
Used from the early 1900’s through
the mid-’teens.
Not easily rebuilt, better to be
replaced
Concertina Type (9-stage)
Used from the mid-’teens through the
early 1930’s.
Very easily reconditioned, powerful
and very reliable.
9-Stage Wiffletree
Late 1930’s-1970’s. A powerful motor
that
is complicated to rebuild, but once
completed,
will last for decades.
12-Stage Wiffletree
Like the nine stage engine,
just more of it.
Electric (Stageless)
The electric engine was a novel idea
– Austin was the
first, and now there are
several. This design however,
has a limited lifespan. Our
suggestion is replacement
with an OSI
or compatible
unit. The existing wiring will
necessitate the installation
of a new potentiometer
on the swell shoe.
